One of the questions I get asked the most is how do I know the price I am getting is best. Not everyone has a contractor that they feel comfortable with, so making a choice can be difficult. With these tips, they should help you feel comfortable with the price of your project.
The main thing you need to do is get three bids. One bid is too small of a sample size, Two bids won't give you much help either. Once you add the third bid in the mix it makes the outcome much more controllable.
With one bid, you have nothing to compare against. If you get two bids and they are vastly different you will be unable to tell which one is most accurate to the job scope. If you get three companies to bid and two of them are close and one of them is very low or high you can pick from the two. If none of them are close in price the problem is not normally with the contractor, it's usually how they were sent the scope of work. You will need to refine your plans to get a better bid. If all three contractors are close, you should be safe to pick the one you felt most comfortable with. Your scope was clear and the price should be very accurate.
